„Nier Automata“ war ein tolles Spiel und schaffte das, was nur wenige Spiele schaffen, nämlich war es nicht nur ein tolles RPG mit dichter Atmosphäre, sowie einer spannenden Geschichte, sondern bestach auch durch sein knallhartes und actiongeladenes Gameplay. Immerhin wurde das Spiel von niemand geringerem als Platinum Games, den Machern von „Bayonetta“ und „Vanquish„, entwickelt. Was aber viele dabei außer Acht lassen ist, dass es sich bei Automata bereits um eine Fortsetzung handelt, dem logischerweise ein erster Teil vorangegangen ist…

Denn anno 2010 erschien der erste Teil, hierzulande als „NieR“, in Japan allerdings bekannt als „NieR Gestalt“ und „NieR Replicant“ je nachdem, ob man sich für die PS3– und Xbox 360-Version entschied. Und eben von diesem Teil ist jetzt mit „NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139…“ ein Remaster erschienen. Und da mir persönlich bereits das Original sehr gut gefallen hat, ist das auf jeden Fall Grund genug sich das neue Spiel einmal genauer anzusehen, das mir dankenswerterweise von Square Enix für mein Review überlassen wurde.

Entgegen der vorherrschenden Meinung sind die Unterschiede zwischen Gestalt und Replicant eher marginal und der größte Unterschied ist der Hauptcharakter. Spielen wir in Gestalt einen Vater namens NieR, dessen Tochter an einer mysteriösen Krankheit leider, spielen wir in Replicant einen Bruder namens NieR, dessen Schwester an einer mysteriösen Krankheit leidet. Abseits davon und einigen Dialogänderungen, die durch den Wechsel der Hauptfigur begründet sind, gibt es keine Unterschiede. Die Geschichte, die Missionsstruktur und auch das Ende, bzw. die Plural, die mehreren Enden, sind komplett gleich. Das Remaster ist, ausgehend vom. Titel, ein Remaster der japanischen PS3-Version, mit dem Bruder-NieR, den wir hierzulande bisher nicht kennenlernen dürften. Wobei es sich nicht um ein 1:1 Remaster handelt, sondern eine gleichzeitig überarbeitete Version, wo die kryptische Versionsnummer zum Tragen kommt. Dabei handelt es sich nämlich um die Wurzel von 1.5 womit die Entwickler zum einen deutlichen machen wollen, dass es sich nicht um einen bloßen Port handelt und dass diese Version gleichzeitig die Brücke zu Automata schlägt.

Auch wenn die Optik massiv überarbeitet wurde und neben dem Kampfsystem, das an Automata angelehnt ist, die größte Veränderung darstellt, so merkt man dem Spiel besonders am Anfang an, dass es aus einer anderen Zeit stammt. Gerade die ersten Stunden führen uns wahnsinnig langsam in die Spielwelt ein, was man heute nicht mehr wirklich kennt. So sind die Missionen am Anfang allesamt eher belanglose Fetch-Quests, die immer wieder kleine Tutorials einbauen. Doch spätestens wenn unsere kleine Schwester Yonah plötzlich verschwindet und wir im weiteren Verlauf auf Verbündete, wie das schwebende Buch Grimoire Weiss, die ständig fluchende Kainé, eine Kämperin im Negligee, oder den verschlossenen Emil stoßen, kommt die Geschichte ziemlich in Fahrt und bietet neben überraschenden Wendungen auch ein paar wirkliche Schockmomente. Für Kenner des Originals ist das zwar nichts Neues, aber die können sich immerhin auf ein paar neue Missionen, vertiefende Handlungsstränge, neue Bosse und ein komplett neues Ende freuen, das einen besseren Übergang zu Automata bietet.

Und in der Retrospektive ist die Geschichte als Bruder sogar etwas runder, als die als Vater, zumal die Handlung etwa in der Hälfte einen Zeitsprung eingebaut hat, der mehr Impact hat, wenn der Bruder plötzlich zum Mann geworden ist, als wenn der Vater ein paar Falten mehr hat. Gleiches gilt für die Beziehungen zu den Verbündeten, wo Grimoire Weiss eher wie ein Lehrmeister anmutet und die sich entwickelnden Gefühle zu Kainé nachvollziehbarer sind, da Bruder NieR und Kainé fast gleichalt sind und den Vater 20+ Jahre von Kainé trennten. Hinzukommen die Erweiterungen der Geschichte, die den einzelnen Charakteren mehr Hintergrund geben, oder gar ganzen Arealen, wie die Küstenstadt Seafront, die im Original unterrepräsentiert sind und erst im Remaster ihr ganzes Potential entfalten können.

Technisch hat sich seit 2010 einiges getan, denn nicht nur hat man alle Texturen, Charaktermodelle und Grafiken komplett erneuert, sondern sind nun auch alle Texte komplett vertont, eine Sache, die noch nicht einmal in Automata vorlag. Besonders die ausladenden Landschaften mit Überbleibseln von früheren Zivilisationen sehen absolut toll aus und würden sich oft gar als Desktop-Hintergrund eignen. Dennoch muss man ehrlich sein und sich eingestehen, dass einige Relikte des Originals den positiven Gesamteindruck etwas trüben. Da man im Gegensatz zu einem kompletten Remake, das von der Pike auf neu erstellt wird, „nur“ das Originalspiel aufgebohrt und erweitert hat, verfügt das Spiel eben auch über die gleichen Defizite: Keine offene Spielwelt, teilweise recht leere Hubs und jede Menge unsichtbare Wände, die uns zusätzlich behindern.

Die Spielwelt ist in kleinere Hubs aufgeteilt, wobei der Übergang von einem Bereich in den nächsten von einem kurzen Ladebildschirm unterbrochen wird. Heutzutage wäre die Spielwelt entweder offen, oder man wurde den Übergang irgendwie kaschieren, wie man es in „God of War“ getan hat. Das an sich finde ich zwar nicht weiter schlimm, zumal die Ladepausen angenehm kurz ausfallen, doch unsichtbare Grenzen und allgemeine Leere der Spielwelt, abseits der paar NPCs und Areale, die nahezu alle im Zusammenhang mit einem Quest im Spiel stehen, geht leider gar nicht mehr. Besonders die unsichtbaren Wände brechen dabei immer wieder die Immersion, wenn man sich exakt auf dem Pfad fortbewegt, den uns das Spiel vorgibt.

Wirklich sehen lassen kann sich aber im Gegenzug das Kampfsystem des Spiels, wobei die Entwickler das recht träge Kampfsystem des Originals komplett überarbeitet haben, um es schneller, spannender und mehr wie Automata zu machen. NieR ist jetzt mit „stylishen“ Konterangriffen, Ausweichmanövern, in denen er sich komplett um den Gegner bewegt und jede Menge Spezialattacken ausgestattet, die oftmals auch mit tollen Partikeleffekten aufwarten, wodurch sich das Spiel in den Kämpfen spielerisch und optisch fast mit „Devil May Cry V“ messen kann. Besonders gefallen hat mir dabei, dass es nun auch eine Schnellwahl für die unterschiedlichen Waffen gibt, sodass man sogar innerhalb eines Kombos die Waffe wechseln kann und es nun endlich auch einen Lock-on gibt, denn beides vermisst man im Original schmerzlich. – Wer einmal das neue Kampfsystem ausprobiert hat wird wahrscheinlich nicht mehr zum Original zurückkehren wollen. Und für Spieler, die sich mehr auf die Story konzentrieren wollen und auf die Kämpfe keinen Wert legen gibt es sogar unterschiedliche Arten der systemseitigen Unterstützung, die jederzeit an- und wieder ausgeschaltet werden kann.

Insgesamt ist das neue NieR damit wirklich eine sinnvolle Neuauflage, die das ohnehin schon solide Spiel durch moderne Anpassungen einer neuen Spielerschaft zugänglich macht, die vielleicht noch gar nicht wussten, dass es zu „NieR Automata“ überhaupt einen Vorgänger gab und sich nicht gewundert haben, dass das Spiel „NieR“ im Namen hat, aber gar kein Charakter mit diesem Namen auftritt. Man hat wahrscheinlich das Beste aus dem Spiel herausgeholt, ohne die zusätzlichen Hürden eines kompletten Remakes zu nehmen. Gerade in Zeiten, wo viele Remaster lediglich die Auflösung verbessern ist es schön zu sehen, wie viel Liebe zum Detail die Entwickler aufgewendet haben. Allerdings kann zweifelsfrei auch nicht von der Hand weisen, dass das Spiel keineswegs perfekt ist. Das war es 2010 nicht und das ist es auch 2021 nicht, denn unter der Haube handelt es sich ja dennoch um das (fast) gleiche Spiel. Doch gerade in der heutigen Zeit, wo die Preise für speziellere Spiele, wo „NieR“ zweifelsohne dazugehört, plötzlich in die Höhe schnellen, ist es schön zu sehen, dass Alternativen geschaffen werden, wie man das Spiel auf modernen Konsolen erleben kann. Man kann sich zwar darüber streiten, ob das Spiel nicht besser direkt im mittleren Preissegment herausgekommen wäre, anstatt zum Vollpreis, doch das wird sich wahrscheinlich in kürzester Zeit selbst regulieren, wenn man etwas warten kann. Ich hatte auf jeden Fall auch 2021 nochmal mindestens genauso viel Spaß mit „NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139…“, wie ich es 2010 mit „NieR“, wobei ich mir sogar gewünscht hätte, dass wir damals schon die Version mit Bruder NieR bekommen hätten, da sie dramaturgisch einfach besser funktioniert und ich nach kurzer Zeit komplett verdrängt hatte, dass ich das Spiel schon einmal mit einer anderen Hauptfigur durchgespielt habe. Daher: Willkommen zu Hause Bruder, es ist schön mit dir!
