Losing our Vital Natural Resources Coastal communities across the Gulf of Mexico are vulnerable to coastal storms and land loss. More than 7,000 square miles of the US Gulf Coast is below 5 feet in elevation and the Gulf Coast has been subject to numerous catastrophic storms since 1900. Furthermore, coastal areas are more vulnerable each year because of sea level rise, coastal wetland loss, coastal development and the likelihood that storms may increase in intensity. These changes threaten buildings, infrastructure, people and natural areas. These natural areas frequently include habitats such as salt marshes, mangroves and oyster reefs that provide valuable ecosystem services or ‘benefits’. These benefits include water quality improvements, shoreline protection, recreation and tourism benefits, and fisheries production. Many coastal communities do not fully understand or recognize that these habitats can provide these benefits. Importantly, coastal communities rarely consider the role that their natural areas can play in reducing erosion and storm impacts. Decision-makers need the best available science and information about the benefits of nature if they are to manage human and natural communities in the face of the storms, sea level rise and habitat loss.

In the Gulf of Mexico, storms, sea level rise and coastal erosion threaten millions of people, local businesses and the overall resiliency of the natural systems and coastal infrastructure.. Using Reefblk™–a reef design made from American steel—and recycled oyster shells, the Conservancy and its partners created 3-4 miles of oyster reef habitat along the Grand Isle shoreline with the goal of protecting and restoring shoreline habitat and creating living oyster reefs as a sustainable option for reducing erosion of coastal marshes, protecting communities from storm surge.. The 100-1000: Restore Coastal Alabama concept was born out of the success of the Conservancy’s ARRA-funded project which restored nearly 3 miles of oyster reefs in Mobile Bay using three different techniques: bags of oyster shells, Reef Balls and ReefBLK(tm).. With the restoration of habitats, such as oyster reefs, that provide a buffer for coastal communities, comes the restoration of Gulf communities’ resilience – economically and ecologically.. As part of restoring resilience of the Gulf Coast, the Conservancy and the Natural Capital Project are helping to accelerate and expand oyster reef restoration.. Additionally, because oyster reefs can reduce coastal erosion and stabilize shorelines, the Conservancy and Natural Capital have developed an innovative Coastal Defense app that allows planners and managers to evaluate where and how restored oyster reefs may be used to help protect shorelines from erosion while simultaneously stimulating a recovering fisheries economy.

With more than a million expats estimated to live there, Mexico is far and away the most popular destination for North Americans looking to move abroad.. What was once a small village on Mexico’s Pacific Coast is now a major international resort, with an urban area that runs for nearly 30 miles along the shore of Banderas Bay.. Considered one of the prettiest small towns in Mexico, San Miguel is a Spanish-colonial jewel glowing in pastel colors.. Like Puerto Vallarta, San Miguel is home to thousands of expats from all over the world.. And most North Americans love its high-desert climate, with warm days and cool nights most of the year, so it’s not surprising that of 140,000 people living in the metropolitan area, it is estimated that around 10,000 are expats.. Or if you prefer, just fly into Mexico City, three hours away, and take the bus to San Miguel.. But Mérida is a very different animal… Unlike small-town San Miguel, Mérida is a metropolis of almost a million people, with universities, major corporations, museums, and its own international airport with direct flights back to the U.S.. Lake Chapala is Mexico’s largest lake, and the surrounding area is also home to the largest concentration of U.S. expats in the world.. U.S. and Canadian expats have been attracted to the Lake Chapala area by homes with gentle arches, hand-painted tiles, and adjoining gardens that bloom all year round.. What the casual tourist may not know, however, is that Ensenada has several excellent research institutions and Mexico’s highest concentration of scientists, leading many to call Ensenada the “City of Science.” The city is host to several important sporting events during the year, such as regattas and the Baja 1000, an off-track race for motorcycles and a variety of car classifications.. Most air travelers either fly to San Diego and cross the border into Mexico or fly to the international airport at Tijuana.. In Ensenada you’ll find the Clínica de Especialidades Médicas San Fernando, the Hospital Santa Rosa de Lima, and the Hospital Velmar, among others.

Go for one of the popular Friday gallery nights and browse local art, listen to live music, and dine at one of the eclectic eateries on the "Ave.". Surrounded by the azure waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Gasparilla Island is truly an ode to Old Florida.. Visit one of the two stately lighthouses on the island, where you'll find postcard-perfect views, especially at sunset.
